About the Role

A veterinary practice is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Head Registered Veterinary Nurse (Head RVN) to join its small animal team in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week, with varied shifts ranging from 8:30am–4:30pm to 11:00am–7:00pm, alongside participation in a Saturday morning rota from 8:30am–1:00pm.

The role combines hands-on clinical nursing with leadership responsibilities, including managing the RVN and reception teams, conducting one-to-one meetings, coordinating team rotas and completing general administrative duties.

Clinically, you will remain actively involved in nurse-led clinics, Schedule 3 procedures where appropriate and general first-opinion theatre work.

Salary: Competitive salary DOE (from £35,000 - £45,000)

About the Practice

The practice is a modern, purpose-designed small animal clinic with a strong focus on high-quality, patient-centred veterinary care.

Facilities include four consultation rooms, separate dog, cat and exotic wards, a dedicated dental suite and modern clinical equipment. The waiting area has also been designed to help create a calmer environment for patients.

The clinical team includes four Veterinary Surgeons, an experienced RVN team, a Veterinary Care Assistant and dedicated front-of-house colleagues, providing a collaborative environment for both clinical and leadership responsibilities.

The practice follows a Fear Free approach, with patient wellbeing and low-stress handling incorporated into everyday clinical care.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and supporting the RVN and reception teams

  • Managing team rotas and day-to-day staffing requirements

  • Conducting regular one-to-one meetings

  • Supporting the development, engagement and performance of team members

  • Completing relevant administrative and operational duties

  • Helping maintain high clinical and customer service standards

  • Delivering high-quality nursing care to small animal patients

  • Running nurse-led consultations and clinics

  • Undertaking Schedule 3 procedures where appropriate

  • Supporting general first-opinion theatre work

  • Managing patient admissions, monitoring, recovery and discharge

  • Communicating effectively with clients and colleagues

  • Applying Fear Free principles to patient handling and care

  • Supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the practice

  • Participating in the Saturday morning rota

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be an RCVS-registered Veterinary Nurse with previous clinical nursing experience and the confidence to take responsibility for leading and supporting a multidisciplinary team.

Previous Head RVN, Senior RVN or veterinary leadership experience would be advantageous. Candidates ready to progress into a broader leadership position may also be well suited where they can demonstrate strong organisational, communication and people-management skills.

You should remain enthusiastic about hands-on clinical nursing and be comfortable balancing clinical responsibilities with team leadership, rota management, one-to-ones and administration.

A collaborative leadership style and genuine commitment to patient welfare, team development and Fear Free veterinary care will be important.
