This role is ideal for an experienced MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon seeking Lead Veterinary Surgeon jobs in Hertfordshire, combining hands-on clinical work with leadership responsibilities. You'll have the autonomy to influence clinical standards, mentor colleagues, and help shape the continued success of a thriving practice while maintaining a varied and rewarding caseload.
With approximately 40–50% surgical work, this role offers an excellent balance between consulting and surgery, making it ideal for a vet who enjoys working cases through to completion while continuing to develop their clinical expertise.
About the Practice
This long-established small animal practice has built a loyal client base over many decades and enjoys an excellent reputation for delivering high-quality veterinary care.
You'll primarily be based in Rickmansworth, with 1–2 days per week spent at a nearby branch in Chorleywood, providing variety while working alongside an experienced and supportive team.
The practice offers excellent clinical facilities, including:
Digital radiography, including dental imaging
Ultrasound for abdominal and cardiac imaging
Endoscopy equipment
Dedicated operating theatre
Separate dental and imaging suite
Comprehensive in-house laboratory for advanced diagnostics
You'll be supported by an experienced nursing and support team with long service, fostering a collaborative environment where open case discussion, mentorship, and continuous learning are actively encouraged.

Responsibilities
As Lead Veterinary Surgeon, your responsibilities will include:
Delivering exceptional clinical care across consultations and surgical procedures
Leading and supporting the clinical development of the veterinary team
Promoting high clinical standards and best practice
Managing a varied small animal medical and surgical caseload
Working cases through thoroughly while delivering evidence-based care
Mentoring and supporting veterinary colleagues
Collaborating closely with the experienced nursing team
Developing tailored treatment plans and maintaining excellent client communication
Supporting the continued growth and success of the practice
Maintaining high standards of clinical governance and regulatory compliance
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be:
A qualified MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon
Experienced in UK small animal practice (minimum three years, with more extensive experience advantageous)
Confident in both consultations and routine surgery
Comfortable working cases through rather than referring prematurely
Interested in developing advanced imaging or endoscopy skills
A supportive leader who enjoys mentoring and sharing knowledge
Passionate about delivering exceptional patient and client care
A collaborative team player with excellent communication skills
This role would particularly suit an experienced Veterinary Surgeon looking to step into, or continue, a leadership position while remaining clinically active.
