About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Veterinary Surgeon in St Helens to join a brand-new, purpose-led veterinary hospital. This full-time, permanent position (38 hours over a 4-day week, 2:9 Saturdays) is ideal for a vet passionate about clinical excellence, team leadership, and mentoring.
As Lead Veterinary Surgeon, you will guide and support a team of vets, ensuring high standards of care are maintained. You will also work closely with the Practice Manager and Lead Nurse to oversee day-to-day clinic operations, evaluate KPIs and P&L, and help shape a supportive, collaborative workplace culture.
Salary: Up to £74,000, DOE
Location: St Helens, Merseyside
Schedule: 38 hours per week, 4-day week, 1 in 4.5 weekends (2:9 rota)
About the Practice
The new St Helens hospital is a modern, purpose-built facility designed to deliver first opinion, referral, and out-of-hours care. It features:
Nine spacious consulting rooms
Three fully equipped operating theatres
Digital X-ray and diagnostics suite
Dedicated dental suite
Isolation facilities
Separate dog and cat wards for low-stress patient care
Central prep area to support efficient clinical workflow

Responsibilities
Lead and mentor a team of veterinary surgeons, promoting clinical excellence and adherence to Animal Trust values
Conduct 1-2-1 meetings, performance reviews, and staff development
Chair clinical governance and staff meetings
Support day-to-day operations and contribute to business performance monitoring (KPIs and P&L)
Deliver high standards of veterinary care across a varied caseload including first opinion and complex cases
Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive team culture
Candidate Profile
Qualified veterinary surgeon with a strong clinical skillset
VetGDP qualification or willingness to obtain
Experience in team leadership, mentoring, and performance management
Confident in conducting meetings and leading clinical governance
Excellent communication skills with clients and colleagues
Business acumen is desirable but not essential
Passion for accessible, high-quality veterinary care
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving hospital environment
