The Opportunity – Public Sector Audit Assistant Manager in Manchester
This company is seeking a Public Sector Audit Assistant Manager to join their Manchester team. This role offers the chance to lead multiple audit engagements, manage client relationships, and mentor junior staff, while working with a diverse portfolio of publicly funded organisations.
The role provides early responsibility, career progression, and the chance to develop expertise in UK public sector auditing, including local government, NHS trusts, and central government bodies.
Key Responsibilities
Audit Delivery & Client Management
Lead audit engagements from planning through to completion
Manage client communications and serve as day-to-day point of contact
Draft key reporting outputs including audit opinions, committee reports, and group reporting packs
Identify risks, provide practical solutions, and deliver value to clients
Team Leadership & Development
Supervise and coach audit assistants and seniors during fieldwork
Allocate tasks, review work, and provide constructive feedback
Support professional growth and training of junior team members
Planning, Quality & Compliance
Develop audit strategies and ensure resources and timelines are managed efficiently
Ensure audit files meet quality standards and firm methodologies
Monitor time spent against budgets and assist with billing
Commercial Awareness & Collaboration
Identify opportunities to add value or cross-sell services
Contribute to business development initiatives and firmwide projects
Work closely with colleagues across audit and other service lines
Requirements
ACA / ACCA / CA qualified (essential)
Experience leading external audit assignments, ideally with public sector clients
Knowledge of UK GAAP (FRS 102), IFRS, and Companies Act
Proven leadership and people management skills, supervising juniors and seniors
Strong communication and client relationship skills
Proficient in audit software and Microsoft Office
Analytical mindset with ability to identify risks and provide practical solutions
Commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing
Location
Based in Manchester, with opportunities to work with clients across the UK.
