Senior Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon – Duns, Scottish Borders
About the Role
A veterinary practice is seeking an experienced Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join its team in Duns, Scottish Borders, in a senior clinical position.
Available from December, this opportunity would suit a confident Veterinary Surgeon who enjoys first-opinion medicine, values clinical freedom and would like to play an active role in mentoring and supporting less experienced colleagues.
Most vets work a 4.5-day week, although flexibility around the working pattern may be considered. The position currently includes participation in a 1 in 8 out-of-hours on-call rota with time off in lieu for nights and weekends, alongside 1 in 4 Saturday mornings.
Salary: Competitive salary DOE (from £55,000 - £75,000)
Location: Duns, Scottish Borders
Schedule: Typically 4.5 days per week; 1 in 4 Saturday mornings; 1 in 8 OOH on-call rota

About the Practice
The practice is a well-established mixed veterinary practice with modern small animal facilities, having recently relocated to new premises.
Clinical equipment includes digital radiography, dental X-ray and high-quality ultrasound, supporting the team in delivering a comprehensive first-opinion service. Veterinary Surgeons are given the clinical freedom to investigate and follow their own cases.
The working environment is collaborative, with an experienced veterinary team that regularly shares knowledge and discusses cases.
Located in the Scottish Borders, the practice offers a rural setting while remaining within approximately an hour's drive of Edinburgh.
Professional development is actively encouraged, with several vets undertaking certificate programmes and receiving dedicated study time.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities will include:
Providing high-quality first-opinion small animal consultations
Managing a varied medical and surgical caseload
Developing appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans
Following cases through investigation, treatment and recovery
Using digital radiography, dental X-ray and ultrasound where appropriate
Maintaining accurate clinical records
Communicating clearly and compassionately with clients
Supporting and mentoring less experienced Veterinary Surgeons
Sharing clinical knowledge and contributing to case discussions
Working collaboratively with the wider veterinary and nursing teams
Maintaining high standards of patient welfare and clinical care
Participating in the 1 in 4 Saturday morning rota
Participating in the current 1 in 8 out-of-hours rota
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will be an experienced MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon with confidence managing a varied first-opinion small animal caseload.
This is particularly well suited to someone seeking a senior veterinary position where they can remain clinically hands-on while contributing to the development of younger colleagues.
You should be comfortable making independent clinical decisions, following cases through and working collaboratively within an experienced team.
An enthusiasm for continued professional development is encouraged, with certificate-level qualifications supported alongside study time.
