About the Role
An excellent opportunity is available for a Veterinary Surgeon with 2–4 years' small animal experience to join an established, supportive and clinically focused practice in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
This role is designed for a Veterinary Surgeon who wants to develop their clinical confidence, judgement and decision-making skills within an environment where thoughtful medicine is valued over simply maximising appointment numbers.
The practice offers 15-minute consultations as standard, genuine clinical autonomy, continuity of care and an open-door approach to case discussion.
Salary: £40,000–£55,000, dependent on experience, alongside generous CPD, paid professional memberships and flexible working options.
There is no out-of-hours requirement, and there is no expectation to take on management responsibilities unless the successful candidate wishes to do so.

The practice is an established first-opinion small animal veterinary practice with a stable and supportive team.
The clinical culture is centred around good medicine, clear communication and thoughtful treatment planning, with Veterinary Surgeons given the time and support needed to manage cases properly.
An open-door approach encourages colleagues to discuss cases, share knowledge and reflect on clinical decisions. The aim is to provide structured independence — support when needed while allowing Veterinary Surgeons the freedom to develop their own clinical style.
The practice has a strong track record of professional development, with previous Veterinary Surgeons progressing into senior clinical positions and specialist training.
Responsibilities
As a Veterinary Surgeon, responsibilities will include:
Providing high-quality first-opinion veterinary care
Managing a varied small animal medical caseload
Developing confidence in routine surgical procedures
Conducting thorough consultations and clinical assessments
Developing appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans
Following cases through to provide continuity of care
Building long-term relationships with clients and their pets
Communicating treatment options clearly and transparently
Discussing cases collaboratively with colleagues
Contributing to a culture of shared learning and clinical development
Developing independent clinical judgement with appropriate support
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will:
Have approximately 2–4 years' experience in small animal practice
Be keen to develop their clinical confidence and decision-making
Have an interest in both medical and surgical general practice
Be committed to providing high-quality patient care
Have strong communication skills with clients and colleagues
Enjoy managing cases and developing continuity of care
Be keen to build long-term client relationships
Value collaborative learning and professional development
Be comfortable asking for support while developing greater clinical independence
