About the Role
We’re representing a long-established, independent firm of chartered accountants and tax advisers with over 80 years of experience supporting owner-managed businesses, SMEs, large international groups, and listed entities. Due to continued growth, they are now seeking an Accounts Manager to join their Wigan office. This role offers the chance to manage your own portfolio of clients, oversee junior staff, and play an active role in shaping client relationships and firm-wide service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a portfolio of accounts from planning to completion, supervising and mentoring junior staff
Prepare statutory accounts under FRS 101, FRS 102, and SORP 102 for complex clients
Liaise directly with clients, resolving queries and ensuring timely delivery of services
Plan and manage work schedules to optimise year-ends, interims, and statutory deadlines
Oversee client records, ensuring files are accurate, compliant, and up to date
Prepare external correspondence to clients, HMRC, and statutory bodies
Organise and lead client meetings, team meetings, and staff appraisals
Analyse and present key financial information using Excel and other tools
Promote the firm’s services to existing and prospective clients, enhancing service offerings
Attend business seminars, networking events, and professional gatherings to support business development
Monitor billing, WIP, recoveries, and ensure efficient job completion
Maintain positive internal and external relationships to strengthen the firm’s reputation
Ideal Candidate Profile
ACA or ACCA qualified with at least 2 years’ post-qualification experience (qualified by experience also considered)
Minimum 3–5 years’ practice experience in an accounts role, ideally with management responsibility
Tax compliance exposure desirable but not essential
Proficient in cloud-based accounting software (Xero and Sage preferred) and Microsoft Excel/Word
Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and time management skills
Proactive, resourceful, and self-motivated with a solutions-driven approach
Strong communication skills with the ability to build lasting relationships with clients and colleagues
Confident managing staff appraisals, mentoring, and supporting team development
