An established and highly regarded accountancy and advisory firm in Stockton-on-Tees is seeking an Assistant Accountant to join its growing team. This firm offers a full range of services including accounts preparation, tax, audit, payroll and business advisory and is known for its supportive culture and long-term career development.

With a proven track record of progressing staff from trainee level through to senior leadership, this role is ideal for someone looking to build a long-term career within practice or finance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparing monthly management accounts and annual statutory accounts

  • Post journals including accruals, prepayments and depreciation

  • Reconcile bank, petty cash, intercompany and general ledger accounts

  • Prepare and submit VAT returns

  • Maintain fixed asset registers and depreciation schedules

  • Support internal and external audits

  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis

  • Liaise with clients and internal teams to resolve queries

  • Contribute to process improvements and procedural documentation

  • Support ad-hoc finance and accounting projects as required

Candidate Profile:

  • AAT qualified or part-qualified ACA / ACCA / CIMA

  • 1–3 years’ experience in a similar finance or accountancy role

  • Strong Excel skills and experience with cloud accounting software (Xero, Sage etc.)

  • Highly organised with excellent attention to detail

  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative team approach

  • Proactive, motivated and keen to develop professionally
