Audit Manager - South East - Up to £70,000

Location: Newbury, Oxford or Reading
We are currently recruiting for an Audit Manager to join a growing Audit & Assurance team within a well-established firm. This role can be based in Newbury, Oxford, or Reading and represents a key appointment within the service line.
This position requires a genuine passion for audit and is ideally suited to an accomplished audit professional with previous experience at Manager level. You will play a significant role in shaping the future development and success of the audit function and the wider firm.
You will oversee a substantial portfolio of clients, managing audit assignments end to end, ensuring compliance with auditing standards, and consistently exceeding client and statutory deadlines. The role also offers exposure to advisory work and business development opportunities.
Overall Job Purpose
To profitably manage a substantial client portfolio within the office, delivering excellent client service while contributing to the ongoing growth and success of both the Audit & Assurance service line and the firm as a whole.
Key Responsibilities
Manage audit assignments in line with firm procedures, agreeing scope, timelines, and billing arrangements with clients
Ensure audit quality is maintained at all times and assist with internal and external quality assurance reviews
Brief, supervise, and develop staff, including on-the-job training and performance appraisals
Monitor budgets, manage WIP, and address overruns promptly with Partners and clients
Maintain regular client contact and deliver consistently high levels of client service
Liaise effectively with other departments to identify and service wider client needs
Develop a strong understanding of the firm’s specialist services and support advisory work where appropriate
Complete review and finalisation procedures, attending client meetings and ensuring timely delivery of final accounts and management letters
Oversee ad hoc advisory projects
Ensure timely billing and profitable recoverability of work in progress
Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge and fulfil CPD requirements
Support business development by identifying opportunities, preparing proposals, and attending client presentations
Act as line manager to students and senior team members
Participate in seminars, networking events, and follow-up business development activities
Attend internal meetings and training sessions as required
Carry out any other reasonable duties within the scope of the role
Personal and Professional Requirements
Essential:
ACA or ACCA qualified
Previous experience operating at Audit Manager level
Proven experience managing a portfolio of audit clients
Strong technical audit knowledge with a track record of delivering high-quality audits
Experience within the SME sector
Desirable:
Charity audit experience
Business development experience or a strong interest in developing this area
