About the Role

They are seeking an experienced, collaborative Veterinary Medical Director to lead a state-of-the-art emergency and specialty hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. This role is ideal for a veterinarian with several years of clinical experience who wants to shape hospital culture, enhance medical quality, and lead a team of specialty and emergency clinicians.

The Medical Director will partner with hospital administration to create a positive work environment, uphold patient care standards, support clinician engagement, and drive professional development and retention. Paid administrative time ensures a focus on leadership without being on the floor full-time.

About the Practice

The hospital is a new, 10,000 sq ft specialty and emergency facility located near downtown Birmingham, designed to provide 24/7 emergency and specialty services, including Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the hospital’s clinical team, fostering a culture of collaboration, engagement, and continuous improvement

  • Uphold high standards of medical quality, patient safety, and client satisfaction

  • Support clinician recruiting, onboarding, engagement, and retention

  • Mentor, coach, and develop veterinarians and hospital staff

  • Engage with referring veterinarians through case discussions, CE presentations, and practice visits

  • Partner with administration on operational initiatives and quality improvement projects

  • Allocate time for administrative leadership, strategic planning, and staff support

Candidate Profile

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited university or equivalent

  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in Alabama

  • Several years of clinical experience, ideally in emergency or specialty practice

  • Leadership experience and strong communication skills

  • Collaborative, approachable, and committed to fostering a positive hospital culture

  • Passionate about mentorship, professional development, and medical excellence
